Fostering for HSP

The Humane Society of Pinellas goes above and beyond for every animal, especially when they aren't ready for adoption quite yet and need a little extra TLC. Pet foster parents open their homes to animals in need of medical care, behavioral training, or those that just need to grow!

What is the Humane Society of Pinellas Foster Program?

The foster program gives care and treatment to pets that are not quite ready for adoption.  This can range from underweight puppies and kittens, to dogs undergoing heartworm treatment, all the way to end of life care, or as we fondly call it, “fospice.”

Who can foster pets for HSP?

ANYONE!  No matter what your lifestyle and pace, there is a pet that is a perfect fit for a foster home.  We do our best to set each foster parent up for success with his or her individual circumstance. No experience required - our Foster Coordinator provides training and support for all foster parents.

WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO FOSTER ONE TYPE/AGE OF PET?

What you are comfortable with is what you will work with!  If you are allergic to cats, you can foster dogs! Puppies aren’t your thing? You can foster cats! We even have small animals, such as rabbits and guinea pigs. We work with your preferences and experience. Education about other species is available!

Is it okay if I have children or other animals?

Of course!  The homes these animals will be adopted into will be as varied as our foster homes, so the different socialization they receive during their time in our program will be beneficial.  We will do our best to make sure the pet fits the home.

What happens after we bring the pets back?

Once the pets are back at HSP, they will have their spay/neuter surgery (if not already sterilized) and then go up for adoption!  You can trust that once your pet is returned to the shelter, it will benefit from HSP’s no time limit policy and have the best possible chance at its own success story.

Keep an eye out for pets available from foster homes! We often give shelter pets a much needed break or some additional exposure by utilizing our foster homes. These pets are adoptable and living it up in foster care!
