We are very proud of our teen volunteer
program here at the Humane Society of Pinellas. Our teens
(16 - 18 year olds) must attend a one-hour orientation to
begin the process of their volunteer work here at the shelter. This
program is in support of efforts for Bright Futures Scholarships,
other academic endeavors, as well as those seeking exposure
to animal welfare careers and interests. After orientation,
they take all the necessary paperwork home and have all
signed by themselves and their parents. Once that is completed,
they come in for a group interview to go over all
the paperwork to make sure it is completed properly, as well
as cover any questions or concerns.
They are now ready to begin! Part of what our
teens do here is to assist the cat area staff with
cleaning, feeding and general care of the animals. If the
teens choose the dog area, they assist the staff with canine
related items. Opportunities also exist within our office
area. Upon successful completion of a minimum of 20 hours,
they can be considered to work in our medical facilty
assisting the staff there.
The students learn many valuable lessons here at the shelter,
including but not limited to, the process of our shelter
from the time an animal comes in through our admissions
office to the time they are placed in our adoption kennels,
the care involved in such, treating various illnesses, bathing,
vaccinating, spaying and neutering and so on.
Another part of their volunteer hours also may include
assisting and/or participating in any one of our many Special
Events here and off property.
The teens who are here, are an invaluable asset to
our organization, and are a vital part in our daily operations
of the shelter. We are very fortunate to have such a program
here, and the youth really do enjoy the learning experience. Our
hope is they will take that experience back to the community
and educate others. Teen volunteer orientation is held monthly...
